Society and Culture

This section is intended to contain information on different facets of Sumerian life, language, and culture, which may not be rooted in a religious perspective but which nevertheless give us insight into the values and practices of the Sumerians.

Basics of Cuneiform. The cuneiform writing system is the oldest one known. The history of cuneiform and conventions used on this site are briefly discussed.

Basic Sumerian Phrases. A short collection of conversational phrases in Sumerian.

Personal Names. A list of Sumerian personal names. At present, limited to names honouring deities.

​Amagi = Freedom. Amagi is the earliest attested word for freedom. The Sumerian concept of a free society was one in which justice and fairness ruled, and all people were free from debt, injustice, and exploitation.

Numerals and Numerology. A brief overview of the Sumerian number system, the earliest in the world, and some of the sacred numbers.
